Lindsay Heights has one of the highest incarceration rates in the U.S. Portals connected residents for dialogues on police-community relations and became a de facto meeting place for residents; kids would play there in the summer, and parents would gather and continue discussing topics after the day’s formal programming had ended.
MGF is an annual event to bring together young leaders, creators and thinkers with established global innovators for the purpose of empowering and encouraging youth. Over two days, the MiSK\_Portal connected over 800 attendees with entrepreneurs, innovators, and changemakers in Berlin, Amman, Gaza, New York, Stockholm, and Herat, for engaging conversations about the skills of tomorrow, entrepreneurship, the future of work, and the power of young people to shape their destiny.
Portals facilitated powerful dialogues around family health at the Global Family Planning Summit co-sponsored by the UN Population Fund and the Gates Institute, connecting family health practitioners around the world, these conversations enabled vital exchange between the leaders who forge global health policy and the populations those policies impact.
Portals hit Detroit just in time for Detroit Startup Week, during which Quicken Loans and WeWork will invest $2.5 million in Detroit entrepreneurs. During Startup Week, the Portal was programmed with an entrepreneurship theme. In fact, Detroiters participated in scheduled conversations that connect to entrepreneurs in cities all over the world, such as Gaza, Mexico City, Herat and Berlin. The Detroit Portal connected to the entire Portals network, including sites in Afghanistan, Honduras, Iraq, Jordan, Germany, Rwanda and Mexico. Additional themes for conversations included dance, mural painting and more.
ReFOCUS Media Labs has been a Shared Studios’ partner on Lesvos, Greece since January 2019. We started our first connections between the island and our other Portals on March 8th with an event on International Women’s Day when local Greeks, internationals and refugees got to talk to individuals in New York, Mexico and Afghanistan. Ever since, thanks to our global network of dedicated curators, we’ve connected Lesvos to scores of communities all around the world.
The Alliance for Peacebuilding is a membership network of more than 100 organizations, including the world’s largest development organizations, most innovative academic institutions, and the most powerful peacebuilding groups. They bring together coalitions in key areas of strategy and policy to elevate the entire peacebuilding field. The Alliance for Peacebuilding brought a Portal to their annual gathering and connected peacebuilders around the world in discussion of pressing issues in the field.
The first ever Portal connection between art galleries in Tehran and New York City connected more than 500 participants in intimate conversations and hosted a dozen artist collaborations. The Lu Magnus gallery hosted our inaugural Portal in its space in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The gallery connected with the Sazmanab Center for Contemporary Art in Tehran, Iran. Participants in both countries were invited to engage in intimate conversations around the prompt: "What would make today a good day for you." Artists such as Titus Kaphar and Yousha Bashir collaborated with one another by cutting up print's of one another's work and pasting them back together at the direction of the other artist -- creating multinational, co-owned pieces. Film directors including Doug Liman and Morgan Spurlock talked about creating work with counterparts in Tehran. Actor Josh Radnor engaged acting students in Tehran. Choreographers Jonah Bokaer and James Koroni created a dance piece for James' family in Tehran. In addition, artist Tania Bruguera spoke to artists in Tehran, and DJ Spooky talked about his work.
The Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum engaged portals for its Kids Week, connecting astronauts and rocket scientists to school children in New York City. World-renowned scientists sparked imagination and a passion for science in this generation of future space explorers.
