The Oakland, California Portal, (known as the AfroPortals Project Space & Archive) is stewarded by Artist As First Responder (AAFR) a cultural justice platform amplifying the work of artists whose creative practices heal communities and save lives. As a collaborative member of the East Oakland Black Cultural Zone and located inside Liberation Park in partnership with more than 30 Black-led organizations, the focus of the interdisciplinary programming centers on the design, incubation, production, and archiving of community-driven projects that invite people and culture to thrive.
Artist As First Responder (AAFR) is a 6-point philanthropic and interactive arts platform that acknowledges, engages, and financially supports Black, Indigenous, and other Artists of Color whose creative practices heal communities and save lives.
The EastSide Arts Alliance is dedicated to make East Oakland better, both artistically and communally.
The Wallace Foundation is a grantmaking foundation that fosters equity and improvements in learning and enrichment for young people, and in the arts for everyone.
AfroPortals is a collaboration pilot project of Artist As First Responder, the East Oakland Black Cultural Zone CDC and Eastside Arts Alliance funded by Mellon Foundation and the Wallace Foundation.
Since 2014, the East Oakland Black Cultural Zone Collaborative Partners has worked with a coalition of residents, government agencies, churches, and grassroots organizing and community groups to help keep Black folks in East Oakland.
