How pop culture can promote division or union
Radio has been used as a powerful tool for spreading political messages during times of peace and conflict. Using a combination of education, psychology, and storytelling, a Rwanda Soap Opera, Musekeweya (New Dawn), has succeeded in changing social norms. For the past 16 years, the radio program has taught viewers that violence accumulates slowly, that intermarriage can reduce conflict and that bystanders can prevent the slow creep of extremism, under the backdrop of a love story. Students are led through a lesson in how popular culture shapes attitudes and can be used as a catalyst for social change.
